1 Your details

A concrete goal or exam makes the plan far better.

2 Your prompt

You are an experienced tutor and learning coach who designs realistic, evidence-based study plans.

## Task
Create a 2 weeks study plan for learning: [subject or skill].
- Goal: [what I want to be able to do at the end]
- Current level: complete beginner
- Time available: 2 hours per week
- Preferred style: a mix of reading, practice and quizzes

## Requirements
- Fit the plan strictly into the available time; give an estimated duration for every session.
- Build each week on active recall and practice, and revisit earlier topics (spaced repetition).
- Define a concrete, checkable milestone for the end of each week.
- Add 3-5 self-check questions at the end of each week, with answers in a separate section at the end.
- Recommend types of resources. If you name a specific book, course or website, mark it [check availability]; do not invent links.
- If my goal is unrealistic for the time available, say so and suggest a realistic version.

## Output format
1. A one-paragraph overview of the approach.
2. A week-by-week plan as a Markdown table (Week, Focus, Sessions, Practice, Milestone).
3. Tips for staying on track.

Why this study plan prompt works

Ask an AI for "a plan to learn SQL" and you get a tidy list of topics with no idea of how long anything takes. Plans like that fail in week two, because they ignore the two numbers that decide everything: how much time you have per week and where you are starting from. This builder asks for both, plus a concrete goal, so the plan can be sized to your real life.

The prompt also asks the AI to use techniques with good evidence behind them. Active recall (testing yourself instead of re-reading) and spaced repetition (revisiting topics after a few days) are among the most reliable ways to remember what you learn. Each week therefore includes practice tasks, a review of earlier material and, if you want, self-check questions.

One honest limitation: AI models sometimes recommend books, courses or links that do not exist or have changed. The prompt tells the model to recommend types of resources and to mark any specific title it names with [check availability], so you verify before you rely on it.

Worked example

Say you want to stop waiting for the data team and write your own SQL reports. These are the inputs:

What do you want to learn?
SQL for data analysis
Goal
Write my own reporting queries at work instead of asking the data team
Current level
complete beginner
Time per week
4 hours
Plan length
6 weeks
Learning style
mostly hands-on practice
Resources you already have
Our company has a read-only copy of the sales database. I have Excel experience.
Constraints
Only weekday evenings, about 45 minutes per session
Include self-check questions for each week
Yes

The builder turns these inputs into the following prompt. Load it into the form above with the Learn SQL example chip and change anything you like.

This page shows only the prompt. The answer depends on the AI tool you paste it into, so always review the result before you use it.

Tips to improve your results

  • Be honest about your time. A plan for 4 real hours beats a plan for 10 hours you never find.
  • Make the goal observable: "build a budget dashboard" is better than "understand Excel".
  • Paste the plan into your calendar as fixed sessions, not as a to-do list.
  • After each week, tell the AI what was hard and ask it to adjust the next week.
  • Use the self-check questions before you look at your notes. Struggling to recall is the point.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT make a study plan for an exam?

Yes. Name the exam in the subject field, add the date in constraints, and the prompt will work backwards from it. Check the official exam guide for the current syllabus, because the AI may not know the latest changes.

How many hours a week do I need to learn a new skill?

It depends on the skill and your goal, but steady practice matters more than long sessions. Three or four focused sessions a week usually work better than one long weekend block.

What is active recall?

It means retrieving information from memory, for example by answering questions or explaining a topic without looking, instead of re-reading notes. Research on learning consistently shows it improves long-term retention.

Can I use this for school or university?

Yes. Enter the course or exam and the topics from your syllabus in the resources field. Follow your school's rules on AI use for assignments; a study plan is usually fine.

Will the plan include real course links?

The prompt asks the AI to suggest types of resources and to flag any named book or course for checking, because models can invent or misremember titles and links.
