Why this product description prompt works
A product description has two jobs: help the right customer decide quickly, and avoid promises you cannot keep. Generic AI prompts tend to fail at the second job. Ask for "a product description for a backpack" and you may get "fully waterproof", "lifetime warranty" or "loved by thousands", none of which you told it.
This builder separates facts from style. The facts field is labelled "use only these", and the prompt explicitly forbids invented specifications, certifications, reviews and guarantees. If something important is missing, such as dimensions or care instructions, the AI is asked to list it as a question rather than guess.
The ideal customer field is what turns features into benefits. "540 g" means little on its own; for a commuter who also hikes it means "light enough that you forget it is on your back." The platform field matters too: an Amazon listing leans on scannable bullets, while a printed catalogue needs tighter prose.
The avoid field is your safety net for wording that is legally or factually risky in your market, like "waterproof" for a product that is only water-resistant.
Worked example
Say you sell a daypack in a Shopify store and want a description that does not overpromise. These are the inputs:
- Product name
- Trailhead 20L Daypack
- Category
- hiking backpack
- Where will it be published?
- a Shopify store
- Features and facts
- 20 litre capacity; Weighs 540 g; Recycled nylon with a water-resistant coating; Padded laptop sleeve fits up to 15 inches; Two side pockets for 1 litre bottles
- Ideal customer
- weekend hikers who want one bag for the trail and the commute
- Tone
- Direct and concise
- Length
- Medium (100-150 words)
- Avoid
- the word "waterproof" (it is only water-resistant)
The builder turns these inputs into the following prompt. Load it into the form above with the Shopify daypack example chip and change anything you like.
You are a senior e-commerce copywriter who writes product descriptions that are accurate, scannable and persuasive.
## Task
Write a product description for: Trailhead 20L Daypack (hiking backpack).
Where it will be published: a Shopify store.
## Features and facts (use only these)
- 20 litre capacity
- Weighs 540 g
- Recycled nylon with a water-resistant coating
- Padded laptop sleeve fits up to 15 inches
- Two side pockets for 1 litre bottles
## Ideal customer
weekend hikers who want one bag for the trail and the commute
## Words, claims or topics to avoid
the word "waterproof" (it is only water-resistant)
## Requirements
- Tone: Direct and concise
- Length: Medium (100-150 words)
- Turn each feature into a concrete benefit for the ideal customer.
- Start with a one-sentence hook that names the main benefit.
- Do not invent specifications, certifications, reviews or guarantees. If an important detail is missing, list it as a question at the end.
## Output format
1. A product title (under 80 characters).
2. A short opening paragraph.
3. 3-6 benefit-led bullet points.
4. A closing line that invites the purchase.
5. Open questions, if any. This page shows only the prompt. The answer depends on the AI tool you paste it into, so always review the result before you use it.
Tips to improve your results
- Include numbers wherever they are true: weight, size, capacity, compatibility.
- Describe one ideal customer, not everyone. Specific copy converts better than broad copy.
- Use the avoid field for claims your legal team or marketplace rules do not allow.
- Generate two tones and compare them on a real product page before choosing.
- Reuse the same prompt for a whole product range so the voice stays consistent.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this for Amazon listings?
Yes. Choose Amazon as the platform. The AI will then lean towards scannable bullet points. Always check the result against the marketplace's current listing rules, which change over time and which the AI may not know.
Will the AI invent features?
The prompt tells it not to and to use only the facts you list. Models still make mistakes occasionally, so read the result and compare it with your fact list before publishing.
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer the questions a buyer has before purchasing. For simple products that can be 50-80 words; for technical or expensive products, 200-300 words plus a specification table is common.
Can I write descriptions for many products at once?
You can paste the prompt and then send further product fact lists in the same chat, asking the AI to keep the same format. Check each one individually.
Does the tool store my product data?
Only in your own browser, so the form is filled in next time. Nothing is uploaded. Click Clear to remove it.
